[00:01:25] Speaker D: Welcome to 35 664, a podcast for the middle I've got a really cool subject to talk to you about today. It's all about vitamins, supplements, middle age and frank. Talk about what we're using, why we're using it, and how we hope it changes our day to day. I want to welcome Megan Steen to the show. Megan has been on the podcast already. If you haven't checked out her earlier episode, it is all about how to love a widower. But today we're here to talk about vitamins and supplements. So I ask her all sorts of things. Does this really work? How do you know? What do you think it's doing? How much does it cost? How long have you been taking it? And I actually share a bunch of my personal experiences as well. With supplements. I have some unique things that I've incorporated that have been really easy, really low cost, and I'd love to share them with you to hopefully increase your health and wellness on this middle age journey. So let's jump in. Welcome to the show, Megan. It's so good to have you.
[00:02:38] Speaker A: Thanks for having me. I'm excited.
[00:02:40] Speaker D: I love having you on the podcast, not only because you're so easy to talk to, you have so many great experiences, but you're really passionate about our listeners and middle age.
[00:02:53] Speaker A: Very much so, yeah. And passionate about today's topic, too, because optimizing health, our mental health, our physical health, our spiritual health, it's also important to me. So this is a really awesome topic to talk about today.
[00:03:06] Speaker D: Yeah. So today we are here to talk about all things vitamins and supplements. I have so many different routines that I've collected from different friends, things that they do every morning, every evening on the road. And it's been fascinating to ask people what their vitamin and supplement routine is. So, Megan, let's dive into what you do on a regular basis.
[00:03:33] Speaker A: Okay. The first thing that I have to do every two weeks, I fill up a pill bottle or a pill bottle. What are those called?
[00:03:42] Speaker D: Oh, like an old person pill organizer.
[00:03:44] Speaker A: Pill organizer. Thank you. Oh, my gosh. Brain. Okay. Yes, a pill organizer. I have found for me, this is the way to actually get myself to take the vitamins and supplements that I have. And I'll talk through them right after this to do it on a daily basis. Otherwise, if I just have pill, you know, bottles out everywhere. I know myself, I'm just not going to open each one and go through that whole rigman roll.
[00:04:12] Speaker D: No. So you like to use a pill organizer. So you do you prep at the beginning of the week for this? Do you lay everything out like, what is your ritual?
[00:04:21] Speaker A: Yes. Every two weeks, because it's two weeks worth, I go through and I just update the whole thing. And I know that. Okay, if I took it on Monday, I clearly see that I took it. So the next day I need to follow it. Now, I will tell you, between you and I, Monday through Friday, I'm pretty good because I set it down right next to my computer. So that's just a really easy thing for me to do in the morning. Saturday and Sunday not so much, because, you know, weekends are fluid and I'm not so great. But I will say Monday through Friday, I'm pretty good about it.
[00:04:52] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:04:53] Speaker A: But the, the one thing that's really changed my regimen is I actually went to, instead of taking a daily women's vitamin, that kind of has a bunch of different things in it. I went to a bite, an actual nutrient bite, and I'll show you. I actually brought it with me. So it's a company called the Gem bite. And basically what it is is you get all your nutrients in one brownie looking bite. And I'll kind of show you right here, this is kind of a ginger citrus. I'm obsessed with these. And this is not a sponsored ad. I wish that it was because I love this brand so much. I've been taking this every day for about a year now.
[00:05:36] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:05:37] Speaker A: And I just want to show you what's in it. And it's just totally here. Do you want to try some?
[00:05:41] Speaker D: Yeah, I'll try one. You know what? For those of you who watch on YouTube, you can see all this happening. We are going to drop a ton of links in the show notes, so you can refer to this stuff later. But this, it kind of looks like play doh.
[00:05:56] Speaker A: Uh huh. A little bit. But it has a lot more flavor to it. It's actually very moist. They do a really good job. But what's the in it? There's a prebiotic, there's a probiotic, there's turmeric, there's pumpkin seeds, there's quinoa, there's ginger and spices, just to kind of give it some more flavor. There's algae, there's all this really good stuff for your gut and your skin health, which for me, I'm almost 30. I'll be 38 in a couple of months. My skin, after having kids, and I have acne, and I've just really battled with it for a long time. I've personally looked into things that are, you know, gut health related, inflammation related, and around skin health. And so this bite for me, is just so nice and easy. I feel like it just checks off all the boxes that I'm personally looking for. And it's really easy because it's. Sometimes pills can be hard to swallow. Sometimes powders don't taste very good. Yes, but this tastes really good.
[00:06:59] Speaker D: Yeah, I just ate it, and it definitely feels like a dense, nutrient rich, you know, piece of chewy stuff. Yeah, it's not bad. I don't need to run for water or anything. Do these have to be refrigerated?
[00:07:15] Speaker A: No, actually, they come in this, like, really great tin packaging that keeps them really nice and moist. So I love that. And it's beautiful. It's a beautiful little package for my desk. Um, and I will say my three year old son also loves the taste of this. So sometimes he'll ask me for some. I don't give him the whole thing. Um, just break him off a little bit. But he even loves the taste, so that says a lot for a picky three year old.
[00:07:41] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah. So you take one of these a day?
[00:07:45] Speaker A: I do, I do. So for me, I kind of treat this bite as my. My daily, just everything that I need. And then, honestly, I really don't supplement that much compared to a lot. I know you're going to get into the things that you take. And, man, when you brought out your basket of things, you do a lot and good. That's fantastic. Everyone's going to be different. But for me, I've just kind of tested over the years and laid around with what made me feel good.
[00:08:15] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:08:16] Speaker A: Or things I knew just weren't working. And again, I go back to skin health. For me, that's, that's one of my big, you know, insecurities. And so I kind of focus on the, the types of things that I need to do around skin health.
[00:08:30] Speaker D: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:08:31] Speaker A: So the other, so the other thing I do with the bite, I do, uh, liquid collagen. I just started doing that. I'm on my second bottle now. That is supposed to be really good for your skin and your joint health.
As we get into middle age and as I get into my forties, I want to make sure that my, my joints are, because I'm starting to feel it, you know, after working out and kids and all of that, joints are really obviously very important. And so I take this liquid collagen. Tastes like a pineapple flavor. That's by spoiled child. I'm really enjoying that. It's about $40 a bottle. And I go through it about a month.
[00:09:11] Speaker D: And you drop that in your mouth? You drop it in a drink. What is this?
[00:09:15] Speaker A: A little, it comes. A little shot glass.
[00:09:17] Speaker D: Oh, okay.
[00:09:18] Speaker A: Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So I'm really enjoying that. And I know collagen just does a lot of really great things, like, like I said, for your skin and your joints. So that's been a really great supplement. And then I have kind of like hormonal issues. I did a blood tracker, actual blood panel of about 45 biomarkers from a company called Insidetracker.com. it's fantastic. And it came back with really good, well rounded results about just my overall blood work and my health. The two main risk factors that I had were around one of my sex hormones.
This website's fantastic. It tells you, gives you a plan, gives you information about each of the biomarkers and what you can do. And for that one in particular, it suggested a supplement called Reversitrol. So I've been taking that for about two months now, you know, hoping that it clears up my skin, but also that it helps, you know, with just my hormone levels.
[00:10:29] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah. Well, Megan, before you even dive further into all these different pieces, one of the things that everyone wants to know is how do you know the vitamins and supplements you're taking are doing a darn thing for you.
[00:10:45] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:10:46] Speaker D: And that's a tough one to answer, and frankly, it's not always one to one, but let's get into that. You invest in, in some of these supplements, obviously it's a regimen. You're doing it because you think it does something. Do you have any data to back that up?
[00:11:05] Speaker A: Yeah, in fact, this insidetracker.com, um, again, not a sponsor, but I hope will be sponsoring this podcast because it's a really great tool. Basically, at the beginning of January, I went into a quest, diagnostics, got my blood drawn, and then about a week later, I got 45 biomarkers back to me in a very easy to read kind of graph and chart of how I was doing the coolest thing, which I've told my friends about and they absolutely loved. But it came back and it said, my inner age is 27 and I'm currently 37 now. So it's ten years, ten years younger.
[00:11:42] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:11:43] Speaker A: You know, and it, it gave me like, my sleep levels and my gut health was an 83 out of 100, which is pretty good. My inflammation 100 out of 100 being a really the best possible outcome, which I was shocked by, by the way, because it feels like inflammation is the hot topic right now and everyone has it and, you know, and apparently my blood work says that doing pretty good there. So doing a blood panel like that, whether it's through a company or through your doctor or, you know, however you're going to do it for me, was a good indicator of, okay, the supplements that I'm taking, the fitness, the sleep that I'm getting, everything, it's all, you know, it's all encompassing. I'm doing the right things. There were only two real risks and those were hormonal, so pretty easy enough to attack.
[00:12:38] Speaker D: Yeah. Yeah. How often are you going to invest in that test?
[00:12:43] Speaker A: Oh, I'd like to do it once a year. My husband does it twice a year, so he kind of, you know, gave me the link and I've told all my friends about it because I think it's so important, especially in middle age, just to get at least that baseline.
[00:12:57] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:12:58] Speaker A: Of, hey, what's going on? And again, this company is really fantastic and it gives you action plans and research and education, and again, it's a, it's a baseline. So you could go back to it a year from now. And, you know, if I change my vitamin and supplement routine or my sleep habits change, or whatever the case may be, it'll just be a good again, baseline.
[00:13:22] Speaker D: Yeah. Gosh. What do you think you would have done if it said you're like, 80?
[00:13:27] Speaker A: Oh, my God. I know, I know. Well, I would have gone into every single action plan possible and like, let's reverse this.
[00:13:35] Speaker D: You're going to be living at GNC.
[00:13:38] Speaker A: I know, I know.
[00:13:40] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I think those tests are scary for people, Megan, you know, not everyone is in optimal health. And sometimes denial is easier than, you know, reality. So obviously, you are saying you strongly recommend this because it has helped you get to a baseline and you're going to continue to do this on an annual basis. Yeah, but that is an interesting test. I have never done it. I'm very interested and I might check it out.
[00:14:10] Speaker A: We kind of go through it. You've been through three pregnancies. I've been through two. When you're going through pregnancy, your doctor orders so many of these blood tests. Right. And that was really the first time. And, you know, my son's four now, so in the last four years, I've done quite a few blood tests because of that. So that's when I started to get really comfortable with it. And I actually really loved to hear my doctor and my gynecologist feedback on how my levels were. You know, when I was pregnant, my iron levels were low because I don't eat red meat.
[00:14:44] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:14:45] Speaker A: Right. And so now I take an ironman. An iron supplement.
[00:14:48] Speaker D: Yeah, an iron. Iron supplement, actually. Before you move on, let's dive into iron supplements. I'm just going to be honest because the audience likes honesty. Our listeners want to know. I heard that when you take iron supplements, it backs you up.
[00:15:04] Speaker A: Not in my case.
[00:15:05] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:15:06] Speaker A: Yeah. I don't have that problem. And I would say that if that were the problem, then I would stop taking that because that's very important.
Like, if I don't go every day, I notice a difference.
[00:15:19] Speaker D: Yes.
[00:15:20] Speaker A: You know, so I'm very regular. Thank you. But if that were the case, I'd stop taking it and probably consult my doctor and say, you know, what can I do instead? Just because I don't eat red meat and I'm not the biggest meat eater in general. So I have found that the supplement does a pretty good job.
[00:15:38] Speaker D: Okay. Okay. And where do you get that supplement? How much do you take? You know, tell us the details.
[00:15:44] Speaker A: Yeah, take it once a day. I get it from target. I just get the target brand. I think it's under $10.
[00:15:50] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:15:51] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:15:51] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:15:52] Speaker A: Guess it's working.
[00:15:53] Speaker D: And it's just a pill.
[00:15:54] Speaker A: Just a pill.
[00:15:55] Speaker D: Okay, so let me ask you another question. These are just things that we hear as we chatter with our friends about health and wellness is where you source your vitamins from. And listen, Megan, I cannot afford to spend $4,000 on supplements a year. So options like Target and Costco and non brand name things I like because it makes it accessible. Do you ever get concerned about quality?
[00:16:29] Speaker A: Honestly, I don't. Like I said, the blood panel that I did shows me that I'm doing all the right things. I'm taking care of everything that I need to. And so for me, it's just a validation of something's working.
[00:16:45] Speaker D: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:16:46] Speaker A: But if I did have a side effect, like I was backed up or whatnot, I'd have to optimize. And that's just kind of what we're doing right now, right? We're optimizing our health every day. We're testing a lot of different things and obviously hoping that quality is as good as it gets. But, um, no, I personally don't. Yeah. Too much about.
[00:17:07] Speaker D: I don't either. But I hear others so hyper focused on it, it can work me up a little bit. You know, speaking of blood work, to all of our listeners, if you haven't gotten your annual exam at your doctor, drag yourself over there. I know especially men in my life typically don't do this proactively. I did just the general blood panel, and I have an interesting story for you. I supplement with vitamin D. So liquid vitamin D. I know that historically, every time I've gotten my blood taken, I'm low. It has that red marker by it, attention needed. And I spend a lot of time outdoors, and I eat pretty well, but I need supplementation. And so I got this liquid vitamin D. This is from seeking health. And it's just like a little dropper. And it's so easy to take. It's an olive oil, and I just drop it on my tongue and I forget if I don't make a ritual out of things. So I put this little canister here in my drink compartment in my car, and every morning I would drop a little droplet in. Well, I had almost toxic levels of vitamin D the last time I did my blood work. And turns out I was taking too much.
I was overzealous in my vitamin D dosing, and it was bring. It was actually giving me headaches.
[00:18:41] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:18:42] Speaker D: Yeah. So we're not doctors here. We mentioned that in the intro. We're not nurses. We're not in the medical profession. We are just middle agers. Like you. And we want to share our stories. But if there's anything that you walk away with today, go get your blood work done so you know where you're at.
[00:19:00] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:19:01] Speaker D: Okay. So, megs, what else do you do? Do you do anything on a regular basis besides, let's see, you have the bite, you have your, let's see, liquid collagen. Yes, liquid collagen.
[00:19:13] Speaker A: Iron.
[00:19:14] Speaker D: Mm hmm.
[00:19:15] Speaker A: Reversitrol, which is that hormone supplement. And then the last thing I do is a fish oil. And again, that's a ten dollar target brand, you know, so all in, I'm spending about $100 a month, I would say, on just kind of my vitamins and supplements. So I feel comfortable with that. I'm a pretty frugal person to begin with, but I want to invest in my health. And I'm sure there's some out there that are thinking $100 is too much. A $100 is nothing. You know, that's the craziest part of this whole world, is just the cost and really trying to figure out what works for you and what doesn't.
[00:19:53] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:19:54] Speaker A: But I feel like I've gotten to this really good place where I feel good. My blood work says that things are going really well, which I'm really grateful for. So I'm just going to keep on the routine. And then if something comes along the way that I've got to pay attention to, then I switch it up.
[00:20:14] Speaker D: Yeah, well, I have a plethora of things to share with you, apparently. You know what was so interesting about this whole exercise is I actually didn't think that I was taking a whole lot and you were like, what in the world? I have friends that take triple what I do.
[00:20:32] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:20:32] Speaker D: And so I know all of us do what's best for our own wellness routine and throwing this in there. I know people that just don't believe in vitamins and supplements straight up. They think that everything should be garnered from your natural activities, your natural nutrition patterns. And if that is not working for you, then you need to change how you eat. And I think we can all agree on, yes, the foundations are there. If you eat beets all day and, you know, then have organic blueberries and move over to unsalted nuts. But the reality is we have other things in our life. We're eating on the go sometimes, and it's not always optimal.
[00:21:19] Speaker A: And you know what I would say, too? It's a mindset thing. Right? I invest money and time and energy into my vitamins, my supplements, optimizing my sleep, all those things. Even if that's a placebo, even if none of this is working to me mentally, I think that it is. I'm investing in it. I want to be healthy. I want to be healthy for my family and my husband and my friends myself, you know? And so this is the way that I'm doing it. I'm finding the things that I like. Like I said, this. This bite is. Is delicious. I look forward to eating it, and so it doesn't affect my day to day. If it wasn't, I'm a little picky. That might be a little tough for me, but I have found the ways. You have found the ways that works. But mentally, we're in the mindset of saying these things are making us healthy.
[00:22:12] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:22:12] Speaker A: You know, and our brain starts to.
[00:22:14] Speaker D: Believe that, yeah, a healthy person does healthy things, and a healthy thing would be to supplement if you need it.
[00:22:24] Speaker B: Is your car still under warranty? No, not anymore. My mechanic just suggested an extended service plan from ox car care.
[00:22:31] Speaker D: Ox car care?
[00:22:32] Speaker B: Yeah. Ox will cover repair bills if anything happens to the car. New brakes, transmission, ac, or engine problems. Plus, ox car care offers free oil changes, tire rotation, and roadside assistance.
[00:22:43] Speaker D: Wait, you pay nothing on repairs, ox gets it fixed.
[00:22:47] Speaker B: Free oil changes, free tire rotation, and free roadside assistance.
[00:22:51] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:22:51] Speaker B: You don't pay. Ox pays. Ox even has a 30 day money back guarantee and is a plus rated on the BBB. They handle their claims from start to finish, unlike those other warranty companies.
[00:23:00] Speaker D: The last thing I need is an.

[00:23:23] Speaker D: I have next to my coffee maker, a basket. And when I'm getting my coffee done in the morning, I sit, and my supplements are right there on the. On the top of the kitchen counter. And I'm out. I'm a declutter kind of person, but I leave them there because I remember it, and it's part of my routine.
[00:23:44] Speaker A: Right.
[00:23:45] Speaker D: And I will tell you, I am much more likely to eat a healthy breakfast and proceed on with healthy choices when I start with the actions of what I perceive as a healthy person would do.
[00:23:56] Speaker A: Exactly.
[00:23:57] Speaker D: Yeah. So even if the supplementation is bunk, which it is not, you know, I told you I was oding on vitamin D and it did something bad. I believe that this is a worthwhile practice, even if it's a minimal ritual.
So I talked about vitamin D and the liquid vitamin D. I have a couple other things I want to share with you.
[00:24:22] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:24:23] Speaker D: A good friend of mine, Rick, who is also going to be sharing his supplement routine with you, his is over the top, but one of the best recommendations that he gave to me was to buy these little pill pouches. So they're little plastic baggies. You know, you get 500 in an order from Amazon, and I'm on the go. I'm working, I'm spending time with friends. I'm out of town. And so I always have these in my purse and in my car. So if I'm not standing at my coffee machine in the morning, I can access these elsewhere. So, like your pillbox.
I've got these little plastic things that work pretty well for me. But let's jump into something a little, maybe more unusual that I do. And I find this to be highly effective. So I like kombucha. So what is that? It's fermented tea, and it has cultures and bacteria in it that really help multiply your gut biome. So let me put that in a different way. For all the people who don't care about all the fancy words. It helps your digestion. You're not as bloated, and it's. It's supposed to help with some immunity function. So your gut is related to immunity. And so I drink these. I try to, you know, every other day. They're about $4 a piece. They're refrigerated, they're a little bit tangy. But I actually want you to try one. Will you give it a try? Let people know what you think about this. They're in glass bottles. I will say drink some of this stuff and see if you feel less bloated. It's strong smelling. I know. What do you think?
[00:26:10] Speaker A: Okay. That one is very good.
[00:26:13] Speaker D: Oh, okay.
[00:26:14] Speaker A: Yes, I was, I was telling Karen before, I'm not a big kombucha fan. I'm a little picky when it comes to taste and textures and whatnot, but actually ginger berry.
[00:26:23] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:26:23] Speaker A: So synergy.
[00:26:25] Speaker D: Love synergy stuff. Just love it. Speaking Frank with you, which is always the best place to be if you have any problems with IB's, with diarrhea, you get backed up, you're bloated all the time. This is an easy first stop shop. I will tell you, if you try this in three days, it might do something for you. It populates the bacteria and your gut biome for you. There's a lot of ways to do that. Fermented foods is the easiest way to do that. And I find this to be, you know, a healthy thing that I like to do. It has other vitamins in it. I. I'll drop a link into the chat to my favorite flavors and kinds, but it's just a drink I have with lunch, you know, or in the afternoon as a snack almost every other day. But I will tell you, I realize when I'm not using it, I can tell the difference in my digestion. And so I highly recommend it. Easy to integrate.
[00:27:24] Speaker A: Where do you buy them?
[00:27:25] Speaker D: Walmart, target, Amazon? Ralph's, your local grocery store. It's a pretty popular brand.
[00:27:32] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:27:32] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:27:33] Speaker A: But that's a great flavor.
[00:27:34] Speaker D: Yeah, they're good.
[00:27:35] Speaker A: I was. I was worried about trying it, but it. That's a. That's delicious.
[00:27:39] Speaker D: Yeah, those are good.
[00:27:40] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:27:40] Speaker D: Okay. So here. Here's another thing that I do that is, I think, unusual. That isn't super common. And for those of you who are watching on YouTube, I've got a needle here, and it is a intramuscular shot, and it has a vitamin B complex in it. So there's different types of vitamin B inside. I go once a week to this health and wellness center, and I get this shot, and it doesn't hurt. There's no bruising or bleeding, and it's in and out in five minutes. And I thought I'd give this a shot because I had read a lot that vitamin B gives you energy, focus, and mood stabilization. Hey, who couldn't use all three of those things, right? So, super low investment. I think I. I have some sort of package where I believe it was $100 for two months. Like, this is not, you know, super duper crazy pricey. And I will. I'll tell you, I'm shocked. I notice when I don't take this, I'm lower energy, and I typically, I'm more susceptible to maybe a mood swing here or there. Love this vitamin B complex shot. I'll drop in the chat, some more information about it, but this is a game changer for me, and I'd love to share it with you. I know that nurses take this, like, in the ER and other people who have very demanding jobs. And I. Being a mom is demanding enough. So if you feel drained, if you feel tired, if you need focus, I'd encourage you to give this a shot. Literally.
That was a real bad joke.
[00:29:30] Speaker A: But do you feel like you're going to be addicted to that almost.
[00:29:34] Speaker D: That's a good question. I'm not concerned about being addicted to it so much as I'm glad I have a pathway to increase energy and focus that is not damaging. I will say that the data on these is pretty clear. There's lots of scientific studies. In order to get the level high enough in your blood that is therapeutic, you need to go once a week to get it done. So this isn't a one and done. This is a I'm committed to the process kind of thing. But, uh, I. Yeah, I won't give you the shot on camera. Megs, please don't. But I might take you to go to my little health and wellness center.
[00:30:16] Speaker A: Energy man, do I need that.
[00:30:18] Speaker D: Yeah. Yeah. You know, one thing I haven't tried that I'm curious about, maybe we should go and report back on. It is like iv infusion treatments. There's centers all over the place popping up.
[00:30:29] Speaker A: Yes, I've seen those. I've never done it, but it's pricey. Yeah.
[00:30:33] Speaker D: And it's time consuming. You sit there for an hour or two with this iv bag.
[00:30:38] Speaker A: I've heard it's good for after having a hangover.
[00:30:41] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:30:42] Speaker A: You know, like. So maybe you just like plan ahead if, you know, you're gonna be out late at a party or something like that. Yeah, could be something to try.
[00:30:49] Speaker D: I am going to a birthday party next month where they have proactively ordered an iv mobile bus to come. Oh, that is extra for the next morning.
That's my bougie friend courtney for you. Yeah, pretty fun. It's a weekend long girls thing, but I think that could be an interesting thing for us to report back on, Megs. Yeah, definitely. Yeah. If you've had experiences with iv drips that are positive. And once again, this is from a supplemental nutrition perspective. This isn't something that we're talking about going in when you get hospitalized or anything. These are, you know, optional, recreational. I don't know if that's the way of putting it, but certainly nothing that would be done in a hospital setting.
[00:31:38] Speaker A: Right?
[00:31:38] Speaker D: Okay, so Megan, I asked some of my friends in the research for this episode that I started about six months ago. What are you using and what am I missing? So a lot of them said collagen. Yeah, just like you. So remind me, I take this collagen because it's good for my skin and nails and hairdouse and joints and joints. Okay, well, it tastes good. I use this ancient nutrition collagen. I put it in water, and since I'm on the go all the time. I fill up water bottles ahead of time and put these in my refrigerator. So it's a grab and go. But this doesn't taste bad. It's. It's really easy. And this huge container probably lasts, you know, 60, 90 days.
[00:32:25] Speaker A: Oh, wow.
[00:32:26] Speaker D: Yeah. I believe it's about $25.
[00:32:29] Speaker A: Great.
[00:32:29] Speaker D: Yeah. Okay. This is another thing. I have a friend, Tracy, one of my best friends, and she is, like, obsessed with magnesium.
[00:32:40] Speaker A: Oh, yes.
[00:32:41] Speaker D: Yeah. And so I tried it. I was like, girl, I take magnesium, too. She's like, well, you need to make sure that it has all the types of magnesium you need. So I was like, oh, okay. So, funny enough, my children's pediatrician recommended magnesium for this. One of my sons was, like, terribly backed up for just months and months and months. And it's great for your digestion and for regularity. It doesn't make you go, you know, oh, my gosh, I got to go to the bathroom now. But it's something supports your digestive track with this, and it's not related to gut biome so much as it is something with your intestines. I should know. I'll post it in the show notes. But, um, I take these. These are called calm gummies. Amazon, Walmart, target. I found them once at TJ Maxx, and I take four of these. They taste like candy. My kids will eat them. And it's, you know, it's called calm. It's supposed to help tamper down excessive energy and those kinds of things. So I give these to them at night. I think you can take them at any time, but it is supposed to also help with sort of sleep, if you will. Have you. Have you ever taken any of these kind of magnesium supplements?
[00:34:06] Speaker A: Yes. My brother suggested it to me for. To get to sleep quicker. I tried it. I had the opposite effect. It kind of wired me a little bit and kept me up. So, again, it's all trial and error, right? And, I mean, he's my brother, so we share DNA, and he. It puts him to sleep right away. It keeps me up.
[00:34:27] Speaker D: Wow.
[00:34:28] Speaker A: So, yeah, it's all. It's. It's crazy, but always worth a shot. And I've heard a lot about it, so I don't know why it gave me that reaction, but, yeah, that.
[00:34:39] Speaker D: That is interesting. Megan, how much a month do you spend on supplements?
[00:34:44] Speaker A: I would say about $100 a month.
[00:34:46] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:34:47] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:34:47] Speaker D: And what if I told you that your supplementation, you're. You're really peeing 90% out of these nutrients after you take them. What do you think of that because I've been asked that.
[00:35:02] Speaker A: It doesn't really affect me. It really doesn't. Like I said before, if. If I feel like I'm doing the best thing I can for my body, I think mentally it's putting me in the place I need to be.
[00:35:13] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:35:14] Speaker A: You know, and again, the, the blood panel that I took, it literally told me and validated that all of the things that I'm doing are working.
[00:35:23] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:35:24] Speaker A: You know, and again, it's not just vitamins and supplements. I go outside a lot. I get a lot of sunlight. I sleep eight to 9 hours every night. I've optimized my sleep. We could talk about that.
[00:35:35] Speaker D: Huge, huge.
[00:35:36] Speaker A: I've optimized it completely to the point where I can't sleep in a hotel because I've done such a great job at home, you know, but, yeah. So. Doesn't really affect me much.
[00:35:49] Speaker D: Yeah. You know, I could swallow a $100. What starts becoming a little bit sketch is if people are spending thousands of. And, and that does happen. You know, it's easy to do.
[00:36:01] Speaker A: It's really easy to do to spend that much.
[00:36:03] Speaker D: It is. It is. One of the things that I want to give you as a tip, listeners, is don't go out and buy a bunch of stuff. Find what you have. Now. I bet you have some vitamin C chewables somewhere, and, and you have some other tablets that you thought you would take and you didn't start with what you have and go from there and add, I have one last thing, and I bring this up because I'm not really sure if I'm sold on it, but I am taking it. It's these veggie and fruit kind of pills. So it's supposed to be ultra processed, but that doesn't sound good, does it? It's broken down to the molecular level for these fruits and veggies, and it's supposed to help be, you know, one to two servings of each. And I feel good when I take it. I'm not sure if it's making a difference so much as I feel like I'm milk making a healthy choice.
[00:37:03] Speaker A: Do you just feel like you're not eating enough fruit and vegetable in order to do that or.
[00:37:08] Speaker D: Yeah, that's a good question. Here's the challenge for me, is eating fresh food requires frequent grocery shopping.
[00:37:16] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:37:17] Speaker D: And so I have struggled sometimes with having very fresh veggies on hand, or fresh fruit for that matter. And I do my best, but that's a struggle sometimes for me.
[00:37:34] Speaker A: So as a working mom. Totally get it.
[00:37:36] Speaker D: Yeah. Yeah. So, particularly the veggies. You know, I want to make sure that I'm getting those in my diet as much as possible so it feels good. Meaning I have less anxiety about a, you know, poor diet day if I take those, but I don't know if I have any data to back up that they're working.
[00:37:56] Speaker A: But if you feel better and mentally, you feel better. I mean, again, that's. That's where I'm at with it.
[00:38:03] Speaker D: Yeah. Yeah. Megan, do you have any strange supplementation routines that you've seen with other middle agers?
[00:38:12] Speaker A: Oh, um, no, not that I know of. Yeah. I mean, honestly, this is a really great conversation to have in the open like this, especially with non medical professions.
[00:38:25] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:38:26] Speaker A: You know, because it's real, and it's. Here's what I'm doing. Here's what you're doing. My husband's into a lot of supplements as well, but no one really talks about it, at least in my circle. No one's really talking about their daily. This is what I do. It's always just kind of a, oh, take magnesium, you know, to get better sleep. Well, that didn't really work for me. That's okay. You know, but, no, I don't have. I don't know of anyone that's had it, like, a weird, weird story.
[00:38:56] Speaker D: Yeah. Yeah. I. I think it's just refreshing to talk about this stuff when there's no. There's no something behind the scenes that we're selling you anything. This is just, like, what we do. What's the worked for us. And we can tell you, in layman's terms, non medical terms, what we hope it does for us.
[00:39:16] Speaker A: Right.
[00:39:17] Speaker D: And, uh, it's. It's easy to share those amongst friends, and. And we want to do that on a larger scale. Do you think that you could keep up with a kombucha habit with that flavor?
[00:39:27] Speaker A: Probably.
[00:39:28] Speaker D: That's so cool. Yeah.
[00:39:30] Speaker A: So, thank you.
[00:39:31] Speaker D: Yeah. I do like your. Your gems, too. Yeah, those are. That's a good discovery.
[00:39:36] Speaker A: It is. And that was just, you know, a Facebook ad. You know, I get so many all the time. Spoiled child, which was the other. It was liquid collagen. That I take, is also, you know, Facebook ad. They pinpointed me. They got me. But I also read a lot of reviews and comments from women my age, and both of those two things have really been working well, so.
[00:40:00] Speaker D: Yeah. Well, Megan, thank you so much for coming on today.
[00:40:03] Speaker A: Oh, you're welcome.
[00:40:04] Speaker D: I am so grateful you just shared your routine. And it makes me feel good. I'm doing a lot here for myself.
[00:40:11] Speaker A: You are. You're doing a lot.
If you feel good, you look good.
[00:40:16] Speaker D: Great. Yeah.
[00:40:17] Speaker A: It's fantastic.
[00:40:18] Speaker D: Yeah. Well, we will drop notes.
So many links, descriptions. There's nothing in it for us. Except here it is for you to give it a shot. And I'm really interested in that blood panel work. I might wait for a coupon code. Yes.
[00:40:34] Speaker A: Yeah. It is. It is expensive. It is. I think I paid, like $600 for it. And they have, like, a variety of different biomarkers that they. And packages and whatnot. But again, we're investing so much time, energy, money into optimizing our health. And for me, starting there and getting a baseline and an understanding of how everything was going, you know, was really insightful. So I think it's worth it. And I'll continue to invest at least once a year. But, yeah, it's. It's pricey, but I'm pretty sure they have coupon codes and everything for that. But insidetracker.com was a really great asset for me.
[00:41:17] Speaker D: Awesome. You know what? I'm going to share one test that I did that might be interesting to some of our listeners. I did an allergy test. Oh, and I did. I've done them with my regular doctor before, and I. This one is a male in one, I think. You prick your finger, you put a couple droplets of blood on some circles on this, like, piece of paper, you send it in, and you know what, Megan? I have some allergies, and they're not stopping me from proceeding on in life. But I pinpointed why I get a runny nose when I eat chicken, when I eat almonds, and a handful of other things that are just always in my diet on cue. If I eat one of those, my nose starts running. Wow. Yeah. And it was listed in the test.
[00:42:12] Speaker A: Interesting. So do you eat less of that, like, with knowing that, or you're just kind of like, well, this is what it is.
[00:42:20] Speaker D: It's nice to know why something is happening. Yeah, I. I did expand a little bit more to, like, fish when I found that out, and I found out that I love all sorts of different types of seafood. But it was interesting to know. This is why my nose is running. And it's clear snot. It's not like boogery, you know, it's. And it comes and goes right when I eat those things. So very interesting.
[00:42:44] Speaker A: Yeah. Our bodies are crazy, and everyone's body is so different. We react so, so differently to everything. And so that's why it's. It's all about optimizing and testing.
[00:42:54] Speaker D: Yeah, that's what it is. For sure. Well, if you have something that you think we should try, let us know. We're willing to give it a shot if it's working for you and it's. It's approachable. We love to hear your stories, so make sure to drop a bunch of comments in the blog and wherever you're watching, whether it's Spotify, Apple, YouTube. We want to know what's working for you. And before we wrap up today, Megan, every episode, we play the game. You know you're old when.
Okay, Megan, I've got a good joke for you. Are you ready?
[00:43:29] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:43:30] Speaker D: Okay. You know you're experiencing a midlife crisis if you sign up for a marathon out of the blue.
[00:43:39] Speaker A: Oh, my gosh. Yes. Yes, yes. We. I just went through that with my husband, actually. Not that he's going through a crisis, but, yeah, he wanted to run a triathlon before 40, and he did it. In fact, he did an iron man, too, before 40.
[00:43:54] Speaker D: That's so crazy.
[00:43:55] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:43:55] Speaker D: Go, Troy.
[00:43:56] Speaker A: Yeah. Very, very cool. I'm very proud of him.
[00:43:59] Speaker D: Yeah. That's one of those things you. You know, you better do before.
Before you're in your eighties.
[00:44:06] Speaker A: I have zero wanting to run a marathon. The iron man is so much. It's crazy. I respect the hell out of those people that can do it. It's amazing. I don't have that. That one. I'm competitive by nature, and I'm athletic. It's. But that is just incredible what those people can do.
[00:44:27] Speaker D: It is. My parents were triathletes, and I find it just to be sheer torture to think about running that far.
[00:44:35] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:44:35] Speaker D: Why?
[00:44:36] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:44:37] Speaker D: You know, people push their bodies, and it really. It really gives them a climax of. I am utilizing this body to the best of my ability, and look at what it can do.
[00:44:49] Speaker A: Yeah. Oh, it's amazing. And during the Iron Man, I saw so many people with disabilities out there.
[00:44:56] Speaker D: No kidding.
[00:44:57] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. People running without a leg or an arm, and I just was in awe of those people of, like. Good for you. Wow. Yeah. I mean, the whole. That whole thing is just incredible. To witness that all shapes and sizes and again, disabilities and. Yeah, the whole thing is incredible.
[00:45:16] Speaker D: Yeah. I have this fear that if I signed up for one of those, I'd be like, they're shutting down the path, and I'm like, the last one. And they're, like, removing the cones, you know, behind me.
[00:45:27] Speaker A: Yeah. You'd be surprised. But I think that there's just something deep down inside that will just send you over. Yeah, yeah, we got to see that. So it's very, very cool.
[00:45:36] Speaker D: That is.
[00:45:37] Speaker A: Yeah. So I wouldn't say midlife crisis. I would just say midlife blossoming.
[00:45:42] Speaker D: I like it. Midlife adventure.
[00:45:44] Speaker A: Adventure. Yeah. Yeah. Really pushing yourself to the, to your body's limits and seeing what you're made of, it's. It's pretty incredible.
[00:45:52] Speaker D: It is. It is. Well, Megan, thanks for coming. We love having you here. You're behind the scenes every day, but here you are sharing more with our listeners. So thanks for coming.
[00:46:03] Speaker A: Thank you. Appreciate it.
